Chuck Porter - Pilot USAF WWII

Chuck Porter, Rotarian 53 years

Our Friend and Fellow Rotarian Chuck Porter passed away Monday July 20, 2009.  Chuck had heart surgery on Monday.  He never made it through the night.  Chuck was one of our most senior Rotarians.  He joined Rotary in Weyburn, Saskatchewan in 1955, the same year Our Club was chartered and was inducted into Calgary South May 25, 1972.  Chuck was an active and dedicated Rotarian.  He served as Club President (Weyburn 1967/1968), and on a host of Club Committees including the Lacombe Home Tours, Visitation, Bridge and Rotary Foundation.  Chuck and Iris enjoyed playing Rotary Bridge.  Iris passed away in 2005 shortly after celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.  Chuck always felt it was a privilege to be a Rotarian and he gave back by generously supporting and actively promoting the Rotary Foundation.

Chuck was born and raised in Weyburn.  In 1941 he left Weyburn for college in Ohio only to enlist in the United States Army Air Force in 1942.  Chuck trained as a pilot and later a flight instructor.  He saw service in England with the 315th Troop Carrier Group and was assigned to the Pacific Theatre following the end of hostilities in Europe.  Given two weeks leave, Chuck returned to Weyburn to wed his high school sweetheart Iris.  He later elected to take a discharge from active duty, serve with the Air Force Reserve and move back to Weyburn.

Chuck and brother Jim joined their father in the Porter Land Company, a major Southeast Saskatchewan farm management and insurance enterprise.    The business has expanded and prospered under Chuck and Jim's leadership.  Community Service came naturally to Chuck - he served on the Weyburn town council for six years and was active in his Church and Masons.

We'll miss Chuck's quiet demeanor and positive, generous leadership.  Our sincerest condolences go out to Chuck's family and Jim and Jean.

Rest in peace Chuck.
