Student Exchange 2002-2003

Roger Haas - Switzerland

Sveta Skryagina - Russia

Roger arrived from Switzerland on August 14, greeted by an enthusiastic welcoming committee!

He attended his first Rotary meeting at our club on August 22, quickly establishing himself as a self-assured, witty ambassador for his country.

Roger hails from Jona, Switzerland, a town of about 12,000 about thirty minutes out of Zurich.  He’s a grade ten student – strong in maths and sciences, with designs on studying “informatic” at ETH in Zurich.  He’s also studying English and French and looking forward to developing his fluency in English.

Roger loves street hockey which he plays regularly with his friends.  Then he’s on the computer – doing home pages for friends and playing internet games.

His mother Hanna sells and rents apartments and his father Hansjurg runs a trust company.  Roger’s older sister Melanie plans to spend the next year in Canada too.

Our Rotary Club extends a warm welcome to Roger Haas!

Svetlana (Sveta) comes from Nerungri, a city of about 120,000 in the Yakutia Republic of Russia.  Nerungri is a coal center located 5000 kilometers (six time zones) east of Moscow and about 2100 kilometers north of Seoul, Korea.  The city’s name means “river of thousands of fish.”

Sveta is a top student in grade 10 pursuing a Humanities oriented program.  Her favorite diversions are hiking and travelling; a year in Calgary should be a winner.

Parents Yuri and Iraida are a businessman and teacher respectively, and Sveta also has a seven year old sister.

The Rotary Club of Calgary South looks forward to welcoming Sveta, our first exchange student from Russia!
